About The Neighborhood

The Greater Covert Area is unquestionably diverse, with multi-million-dollar homes on Lake Michigan, rural estates, historic farms, and a variety of residential properties. It is also home to Whirlpool’s impressive & secluded Training Center.
The area around Le Lac Appelle includes newer homes across the street, scenic woodlands & fields, farmland, a nature preserve, and quality homes within Le Lac Appelle.
When exploring the Covert area for the first time, it’s important to know what’s taking place behind the scenes.

Covert Township is undoubtedly in a state of transition.  In 2006, the township revised their long-term Master Plan and adopted new Zoning Codes. City water was installed throughout the entire township, and new construction permits were issued for quality homes.  Great strides have been made in transforming the area with well over 50 homes already demolished & removed.

In the Summer of 2013, the township took it up a notch!
The Planning Commission, accompanied by their Planning Consultant and Code Enforcement Officer, chartered a bus for two-days and toured every road in the township, then submitted their recommendations to the Township Board.

The Township Board embraced important changes to streamline the process, including hiring a new law firm and refining the ordinances to more efficiently address blight & condemnations.

As of April 2014, progress in Covert continues to move forward with eleven more homes slated for removal.
Don’t Blink?  You may recall other areas in transition from a few years back, like the south side of South Haven, the Lions Park area in St. Joseph, or the Edgewater/Harbor Shores area in St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, which have all transitioned before our eyes over the years. This type of transformation doesn’t take place overnight, but it is undeniably happening in Covert right now.

“Covert” …  its very name implies that it was “not intended to be known, seen, or found out.”  But it’s just a matter of time before the word gets out.  Covert is about halfway between St. Joseph & South Haven, providing convenient access to both resort communities! There are five remarkable parks within a short drive, including public beaches along Lake Michigan, Van Buren State Park, and Southern Michigan’s Largest Nature Preserve.   Covert also has it’s own full-time police & fire departments and nearby access to Interstate-196.
